"All we care about are the runway models, cadillacs and liquor bottles," Lady Gaga
Monday, February 8, 2010

Meet Stephanie
This month Steph gives us an inside look to her fashion photo shoot.
What you need to know:
Fashion Design Student at FIT in NYC.
Has interned for big time designers like Anna Sui and Michael Kors. Currently interning for Bliss Lau.
Her favorite designer is Rodarte.
♥'s her hightop black Converse sneakers.
Ambition? To become a fashion designer. (Well, we at RichSkinnyPretty.com have no doubt that she is well on her way).

Although the life of fashion intern is always filled with last minute emergencies and random errands, relatively speaking Winter vacation has been so relaxing... a much needed break from my first semester at FIT - one that can only be described by the never ending projects and the overwhelming competition and pressure that surrounded each one. Although I will miss having a social life, with second semester and my internship at Bliss Lau around the corner I am anxious for the chaos to start all over again.

Most recently I coordinated a Lady Gaga inspired photo shoot. All the clothing, jewelry, and accessories are Stephanie Hijazi originals and most garments are examples of my work first semester!

Photographer: Brandon Rabbie

Stylist: Stephanie Hijazi & Gajan Khanna

Make-Up & Hair Artist: Maheen Kadri and Jolanada Mclaughlin

Come back next month to read Stephanie's entry from New York Fashion Week.

"Lights and music are on my mind" - Cut Copy. New York Fashion Week Spring 2010

Meet Stephanie
This month Steph gives as an inside look from behind the fashion shows of New York Fashion Week.
What you need to know:
Fashion Design Student at FIT in NYC.
Has interned for big time designers like Anna Sui and Michael Kors.
Her favorite designer is Rodarte.
♥'s her hightop black Converse sneakers.
Ambition? To become a fashion designer. (Well, we at RichSkinnyPretty.com have no doubt that she is well on her way).

"Before I had a chance to adjust to my first semester at FIT, Fashion Week began...Fashion Night Out was the first event on my schedule, during the day I worked with Teen Vogue setting up for their fashion show and Taylor Momsen's performance and then spent the evening wandering the floors of Barneys. Although I was unable to make it past the mosh pit surrounding Manolo Blahnik, I was able to talk with Behnaz Sarafpour, as she sketched a design based on my personal style, and then with Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte who couldn't have been more nice or more modest."

"Other highlights for me included working at the Vassilios Kostetos show. You would never know it was his first season showing in New York, based on his edgy collection dominated by red carpet worthy mini dresses. His sophisticated color palette and touches of glamour & femininity was also so refreshing and modern. I also loved working at the Carolina Herrera show. Her choice of inpspiration: woven Japanese baskets was very original and translated into a chic collection of more youtful silhouettes in cool textured fabrics."

"As usual, the highlight of my fashion week was the Anna Sui show. Although I generally like her collections more when there is a bit of Rock n Roll feel, I think throwing on one of her bright, cheerful shifts with an adorable flowered head scarf is the perfect remedy for any bad day. And meeting Fern Mallis & Peaches Geldorf wasn't bad either."

Interview with a New York FASHION INTERN
Sunday, August 9, 2009

Meet Stephanie

RSP: What is your current position in the fashion industry?
(Feel free to include previous experience as well).
Steph: Aspiring womenswear fashion and accessory designer...
I interned with both Michael Kors and Anna Sui. I am currently majoring in Fashion Design starting this fall at FIT.

RSP: Which fashion designers or runway trends influence your overall look?
Steph: My favorite designers are Marchesa and Rodarte but right now my style is most inspired by Balmain's edgy rock look.

Backstage @ Anna Sui with Agyness Deyn's (Kelly's favorite model by the way) sis and assistant - wearing a dress of her own design.

RSP: What is the biggest TREND or MUST-HAVE ITEM for summer?
Steph: Neon floral prints and studded/acid washed/ripped jeans.

RSP: What is your most prized fashion possession?
Steph: My black hightop Converse sneakers.

RSP: What can we find in your closet? Please include specific items, accessories and brands.
Steph: Lots of MK and Anna Sui of course, Converse in every color, lots of black & purple & leather and a crazy collection of Tripp jeans.

RSP: In your opinion what is the biggest fashion faux pas???
Steph: Looking skanky (2 tight, 2 short, 2 revealing, etc) ewww
it sometimes works on supermodels walking the runways or in edgy magazine spreads but not a flattering everyday look for the average woman!

INSIDE EDITION
From the Red Carpet to Prom Night
4/17/09

Stephanie's looks were inspired by Beyonce and Katy Perry

If these prom dresses look familiar, they should because the looks came straight from the red carpet.

Antonia van der Meer, editor-in-chief of Your Prom magazine, tells INSIDE EDITION, "The prom is very much like their own red carpet moment so it's really fun to kind of emulate some of those Hollywood stars on the big night."

Natalie Portman got rave reviews in a Grecian-inspired gown. INSIDE EDITION found an almost identical reproduction by Faviana, right down to the intricate bodice. Describing the dress, van der Meer says, "[It] has wonderful rouching and sparkly beads on it, and that's the important details from Natalie Portman's dress."

Another dress by David's Bridal is inspired by the silky one-shouldered silver and black Yves San Laurent gown worn by Kate Winslet at the 2009 Oscar© ceremony.

A red cap-sleeved gown, also by Faviana, is a dead ringer for the red Valentino one worn by Miley Cyrus.

But for a younger, edgier look, girls are taking a cue from pop stars like Katy Perry. "This kind of dress," says van der Meer, pointing out a flashy mini-dress, "is very appealing for prom in part because it's short and has a lot of glitter." With just a little effort, you can feel like a Hollywood celebrity on prom night.

INTERNAL AFFAIRS: THE SUI LIFE

Yesterday, you met Erin Fetherston's intern, Molly. Today, meet Stephanie Hijazi, the 16-year-old Anna Sui intern from Rye, New York

"I called every single fashion company in the city," she told me backstage, "and Anna Sui was the only one that would accept an intern still in high school. But I'd already taken all of these courses in pattern making, so I think that's why they let me work for them. The experience of working for Anna and her team has been unbelievable," she gushed, "because before I started working there, I had no idea what went into making a clothing line. Now I understand it's not just design, there's so much else."

Clearly her work-study experience is paying off. Take a look at Stephanie's impressive outfit, which she designed, cut, and sewed herself (and which I thought was an Anna Sui piece from last season...)

"I'm not taking any orders yet," she joked, "but maybe later, when I have more fabric!"

Stephanie Hijazi, A Student of Style

By April Miller

Looking at Stephanie Hijazi's clothes, it's clear she loves fashion. But unlike many stylish girls, some of her most fabulous pieces are of her own design.

Stephanie, 16, is an aspiring fashion designer who spent the summer interning for designer Anna Sui. She had the thrill of a lifetime Sept. 10 when she was backstage for Sui's New York Fashion Week show.

"I have always watched the shows on-line, but it's so much cooler in real life," Stephanie said. "I saw all these people I look up to - models, make-up artists and fashion journalists."

Fashion has been a love of the Rye High School junior since eighth grade, when she dropped athletics for art and fashion illustration. She has worked hard at her craft, from AP Art classes at RHS to pre-college courses at Parson's and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

"I want to make sure I have as much experience as possible, because fashion is such a hard and cutthroat business," she said.

Her inspirations include Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel, Nicolas Ghesquiere from Balenciaga and, of course, Sui.
Stephanie got the internship after emailing Sui's people, who wanted to see samples of her work. They liked what they saw and she got the job, making her the youngest intern and the only one in high school.

She did everything from helping with pattern making, to organizing buttons to fitting models. Getting to watch Sui's show at Fashion Week was a perk, as was getting money to spend on Anna Sui clothing after completing 120 hours of work.

Stephanie also got to see up-close what being a fashion designer is like.

"Anna Sui is such a hard worker. She is in the office almost every day and she is really hands-on. She talks to all the interns and is nice to everybody."

She will soon be a part of Teen Vogue's Fashion University in October, a weekend event that includes lectures by fashion designers, a runway show and workshops featuring fashion experts like Tim Gunn from Project Runway.

She has already started getting requests to design clothes for her peers and if all goes as planned, she will return to Fashion Week again someday, this time for her own line.

Designer's Profile: Stephanie Hijazi "New Generation"
August 21st, 2008 Charls Pasion Posted in New York

One of Stephanie Hijazi's favorite fashion quotes was said by Yves Saint Laurent, "Fashions fade, style is eternal".

"I agree that fashion changes rapidly but an individual with a sense of style, I will always be well dressed" says Stephanie Hijazi, and as a fashionista, I could not could agree more! Stephanie Hijazi is a seventeen year old aspiring designer, who has worked with several of the industry's more prestigious fashion houses. Stephanie at a young age, has already interned at Ana Sui and is currently interning for Michael Kors.

"My signature look is continually evolving with the ever changing trends of high fashion. I enjoy sewing my own designs, as well as making some of my own accessories and then combining them with the clothing of established designers, or sometimes a great vintage piece. I admire and often use as inspiration the edgy look of Agyness Deyn. She is always willing to take risks and is consistently photographed in "outrageous", colorful outfits that express her vibrant style."

Fashionistas have been dictating fashion for centuries, one can never tell where fashion is going next and American fashion is constantly being compared to its European counterparts. Stephanie expressed that the European runway collections are very artistic in an extreme manner, ensembles that are generally not wearable. On the American runway collections are generally far too commercial, trying to sell products that are easily worn, by a variety of women.

Stephanie is currently attending Rye High School as well Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons, where she's been taking extensive courses, among them are Fashion Design, Product Design, Hand Embroidery and Applique just to name a few. Clearly her hard work has been paying off. "My fashion role model is Michael Kors. For the past year, I have had the privilege of interning at his company. Despite his global recognition and success, he strives to create a very intimate atmosphere inside his corporate walls. He is accessible, personable, has a great sense of humor, and is very hands on with his designers. I admire all these qualities and hope to one day be able adopt a similar style with my own team. His long term appeal to today's women, stems from an innate understanding of his customers. This is quite apparent in the varied focus of the different lines he has created to target to the specific needs of the consumer.

Eventually, I hope to develop a similar, sophisticated understanding of women's fashion that will enable me to create clothing which appeals to a wide audience" she explains. Not an easy task by any means.
